The hard copy of the document is scanned light source and produces a computer readable image.
The commonly used one is flatbed scanner. It has a flat surface. The materials to be scanned is placed on the flat surface.
Advantages
Images can be stored for editing in future.
Scanners are much faster and accurate.
Disadvantages:
Some times, quality is limited.
